Strange Love. Or how I learned to stop worrying.

Sometimes I think too much. That is not to say they’re coherent or even interesting thoughts but they do run round and round in the spacious corridors of my post-concussive interior world. Incessantly. Some people spend an enormous amount of energy, in a variety of ways, trying to silence these internal debates: Yoga, television, meditation, OCD apartment cleanliness, drugs, sex, drugs with sex, food and the ageless standby– drunken sottery. With the exception of Yoga I have indulged in all of …

On The Nature Of ‘Things’.

‘Beauty, midnight, vision dies: Let the winds of dawn that blow Softly round your dreaming head Such a day of sweetness show Eye and knocking heart may bless, Find the mortal world enough;’ W H Auden from ‘Lay your sleeping head, my love.’

1.Don’t mention that it’s a piece on the slipperiness of the term ‘sustainability.’ 2.Use an attractive and provocative featured image. 3. Avoid using the term paradigm at all costs. 4.Use the current meme of titling posts as lists of things and then reference it as a sly way of getting people to read a post that isn’t about lists. 5. Make up a half-clever list to make sure people aren’t too annoyed when they realize #4 is true.

A Higgs boson is not a kind of shoe.

So– the universe, as we understand it, is a slightly less mysterious place today. CERN in Geneva has announced that there is a reasonable chance that the Higgs boson, a particle that underlies the basic fabric of the universe, has peeked out from behind the veil and announced it’s likelihood. This is huge news mostly because it seems to confirm a basic tenet of quantum theory. In turn it shades the whole of Quantum Physics as something other than the …

There are many inherent contradictions embedded in what seems to be the human condition. We all seek security while railing against anything that constrains our personal freedoms. Truth and wisdom are some of our most valued commodities yet we incessantly engage in wilful self-deception and asinine behaviour. We value fidelity while celebrating diversity and new experience… and so on, ad nauseum. The seesaw of human desires and emotions would be a tired catskills punchline if there were actually a god. …

To Be or To Be Something Else.

Essentially this is about what is real and what is something other. It seems like the lines that once delineated fantasy from reality have vanished. More significantly real, live people have begun to distort themselves in ways that are, to me anyways, alarming. I’m going to give an extreme example and then try to work back from that. Hard to believe these are real people, isn’t it? (In one case, and I’ll let you guess which one, there is …

Clothed and naked.

For me, writing is kind of like sculpture. There is an image underneath the stone and my job is to find that image and give it shape. Meaning as well. And yes, I realize in that metaphor my head is made of rock. Inelegant but accurate. Clothing and fashion can often create the illusion of evolution in both an individual and a culture. Illusion because the movement, the ‘progress’, is often contrived and meaningless, a ploy to create an …
